How It All Began... In 1998 in the historic town of Rawene, Hokianga an idea came about because of an opportunity that presented itself. This opportunity was one of the oldest butcher shops In New Zealand. It became available after closing it's doors in August 1998.

Spenser and Amanda Probett with their son Dorian had moved to the area in 1997 after returning from five years overseas. In that time they had been heavily influenced by the increasing awareness and demand of world markets for organic produce, the ever increasing dangers to the global population from toxic residues
present In food stuffs, and the enormous potential and opportunity for New Zealand in organic food production. With limited resources available to them the shop was completely transformed into a GE free organic health food store.

Hokianga Wholefoods was born on; January 1st 1999. It's vision was to provide an outlet for locally grown organic fruit and vegetables, organic grains, flours, pulses etc. It quickly expanded to include natural herbal remedies, crystals, spiritual books and cds, aromatherapy etc. It became a centre for organic networking for the Northland, helping growers to interact with a wider market place, spreading the word for a genetically engineered free Northland and promoting organic food as a key to natural health.
The shop supports Maori health and it is obvious that food allergies in indigenous populations are linked to chronic ill health. Hokianga Wholefoods offers alternatives to dairy products and a wheat free diet etc; as well as down to earth advice about changing your diet and taking self responsible steps towards your well being.
